NAVIGATION AND SAFETY COURSE

Additional Information

Learn the basics of how to use a map and compass along with what you might want to take with you when heading outdoors when walking or hiking. Depending on the level of knowledge/experience of the individual or group and time that we have, the following will be covered.

  • Introduction to maps and care and use of maps.
  • Map scale used by hill walkers.
  • The Grid system and 4 and 6 figure Grid references.
  • Map symbols and using features to aid navigation
  • Contour lines and basic interpretation.
  • Use of the compass to take bearings from a map.
  • Walking on a bearing.
  • Pacing.
  • Identifying and using handrails and maintaining position with an orientated map.
  • Recognising the shape of the ground on a map and on the ground.
  • Planning a route and implementing a route plan.

We will also aim to cover other related topics such as emergency procedures for if anything goes wrong (injury or getting lost), emergency action plans, bad weather planning and how to prepare for an expedition. Note: our navigation courses are designed to give attendees an insight into planning and preparation stages, along with the safe and successful execution of navigating.

 

What to bring: Suitable outdoor footwear, waterproof jacket and trousers.

Bring a folding camping chair or similar for sitting on.

Also you will need to bring your own food and something to drink.


There are various types of navigation and safety course.

2 day's with overnight stay, 10am - 4pm, £80.00 per person.

Full day, 6 hours, 10am - 4pm, £50.00 per person.

Half day, 3 hours, 10am - 1pm, £45.00, per person.


For the variouscourses arrival at the location for 09.30am is appreciated.

Note: we will supply tent, sleeping bag and cooking equipment etc for the 2 day's with overnight stay. course
